TAIEF Digital Vanguard Initiative Session 2

Session 2 Study Guide: The Digital Shield & Cyber Hygiene

“A Guardian who cannot protect themselves cannot protect the community.”

Think Global Session 2 slide: The Digital Shield & Cyber Hygiene - A Guardian who cannot protect themselves cannot protect the community.

1. Core Concept: The Digital Shield

In the physical world, a Man O' War comrade understands perimeter security. In the digital world, your perimeter is your data. Cyber Hygiene is the practice of maintaining "clean" and secure habits to prevent zero-day attacks, phishing, and data leaks.

  • The Goal: To move from being "digitally vulnerable" to becoming a hardened target.
  • The Vanguard Rule: Security is not a product you buy; it is a habit you practice.

2. The Three Pillars of Cyber Defense

  1. Identity Security: Ensuring only you can access your accounts.
  2. Device Hardening: Closing the "digital windows" on your phone and laptop.
  3. Human Intelligence (HUMINT): Developing a "BS Detector" for scams and social engineering.

3. Hands-On Tactical Activities

Activity A: The Password Strength Test

Most people use passwords that an AI can crack in less than 3 seconds.

Activity B: 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) Drill

2FA is your second line of defense. Even if someone steals your password, they can't get in without your physical phone.

Activity C: Phishing Identification (The Spot the Scam Challenge)

Scammers use "Social Engineering" to trick your brain.

4. The Vanguard "Security Scrub" Checklist

Complete these five steps before Session 3:

  • [ ] Check for Breaches: Go to Have I Been Pwned and enter your email to see if your data was leaked in the past.
  • [ ] App Permissions: Go to your phone settings and delete any app you haven't used in 3 months.
  • [ ] Update Everything: Install any pending OS or App updates (these often contain "Security Patches").
  • [ ] Clear the Cache: Clear your browser history and cookies to remove tracking tokens.
  • [ ] Set a Privacy Screen: Ensure your phone requires a PIN/Biometric to open (no "Swipe to Unlock").

5. Session 2 Assignment

Identify one "Digital Vulnerability" in your local command or community. Example: "The Unit's duty roster is posted on a public notice board where anyone can see phone numbers."

Be prepared to discuss a "Digital Fix" for this in the WhatsApp group.

Vanguard Note: “Discipline in the field is useless if you are compromised in the cloud.”
